CNN describes Dr Gregory Stone as “ The swashbuckling Indiana Jones of the sea, ” while in reality he is an ocean scientist who seeks ways for humanity and the ocean to co-exist and support each other in the modern world.

His career is built on strong academics, accessible communications and first hand exploration of our global ocean through his over 12,000 dives down to 18,000 feet using submarines, SCUBA, underwater habitats and robotics. Greg’s research and thought leadership is the theme of his recent book, SOUL OF THE SEA IN THE AGE OF THE ALGORITHM. He was also co-founder of the Ocean Health Index, which provided a paradigm shift by including the needs of humans in the definition of a healthy ocean.

Notably, he was the architect of the first large (>400,000 km2) open ocean protected area (Phoenix Islands in the central Pacific) setting a trend that continues today. His ability to communicate complex science is illustrated by his TED and Davos talks, and documentaries for Discovery and National Geographic. He’s authored hundreds of publications including in NATURE, NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, MARINE TECHNOLOGY, and four books, one a National Outdoor Book Award winner. Greg’s accolades include National Geographic Hero, Explorers Club National Fellow, Pew Fellowship for Marine Conservation, the Boston Sea Rover’s Diver of the year, Order of Kiribati Medal, the U.S National Science Foundation/Navy Antarctic Service medal, and the “Oscar of the ocean world” a NOGI from National Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences. Previously, Greg was EVP-Chief Scientist and head of the global marine program for Conservation International (2008-2018), Senior Science Advisor to the UN Special Envoy for Ocean (Jan, 2018-July 2018). He is a trustee and co-founder of Pole-to-Pole Conservation.
